At Our Business, We Don’t Put People On Hold
You might be surprised at the number of business owners who say, and maybe even believe, that callers to their places of business are not placed on-hold.
Maybe they’re just wishing it was true, because the fact is, an AT&T study has found, that 7 out of 10 business callers are placed on hold. And as the old 16th century saying wisely put it, ‘if wishes were fishes we’d all swim in riches.’
Business owners like all of us have heard the horror stories from people who’ve been stuck on hold listening to meaningless, irrelevant messages and awful music.
And, that’s brought some of them to what psychologists call, a state of ‘denial’. That’s described as, ‘the refusal to accept a past or present reality, and is most commonly employed to protect from the negative actions of another.’ In this case, the ‘actions of another’ would be the wrong message on-hold content, from the wrong message on-hold company, produced and played to people for whom it has little, or no meaning or value. And those business owners don’t want to believe that their customer’s would ever have to be stuck on hold on their telephones listening to that.
And they don’t have to be!
